If the Met Gala is fashion’s carnival, then the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (or CFDA for short) annual awards are fashion’s Oscars. Since its first iteration in 1981, the CFDA Fashion Awards have celebrated the best in American design, in the fields of both established and emerging talent.
In 2022, the list of nominated creatives includes notables you’re no doubt familiar with, and who continue to shape the industry in forward-thinking, innovative ways—Catherine Holstein of Khaite, Gabriela Hearst, Aurora James of Brother Vellies, Emily Bode and Christopher John Rogers, to name a few.
“The 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards will celebrate, not just honor, American fashion’s best and brightest talents, but also the CFDA’s 60th-anniversary milestone,” said CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said. “This year’s nominees reflect the renewed excitement around American fashion generated by designers who are redefining the future of our industry. The CFDA thanks Amazon Fashion for its support of the awards.”
Several of the celebrity guests in attendance also demonstrated their support for the CFDA nominees by wearing their designs on the red carpet. Sisters Kim and Khloé Kardashian chose skin-tight dresses by LaQuan Smith—the former in a strapless column gown with a cellophane-sheer skirt, and the latter in an asymmetric dress with a train, crafted from a lustrous bronzed jersey.
Gigi Hadid, on the other hand, dove headfirst into punkish glamour. She teamed her head-to-toe Thom Browne look—a raw-edged tartan vest over a white shirt and striped trousers—with a bold grey lip and faux septum piercing, slinging a tweed blazer over her shoulder to finish.
Elsewhere, further proof that the red carpet has taken an increasingly minimalist turn. LBDs were the reigning theme of the evening. Anok Yai, Julia Fox, Mariska Hargitay, and Daphne Groeneveld were just some of the guests who slipped into slinky, ink-colored gowns. They were joined on that front by model Jill Kortleve, Kylie Jenner in Mugler, and Kris Jenner in Schiaparelli.
